Admission Procedure

Applications are invited through countrywide advertisement in leading newspapers usually during September/October and March/April for the January and July session respectively. The entrance examination is held in December for the January session and in the June for July session.

MD/MS Courses:

Candidates are assessed at a formal entrance-test on the basis of a suitably designed multiple choice questions (MCQ) type theory paper. For candidates appearing for MD/MS entrance examination, the theory paper consists of 240 questions pertaining to subjects studied during the MBBS course viz. Medicine and Surgery (36 questions each), Obstetrics and Gynaecology (18 questions), Paediatrics, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, ENT and Applied Biochemistry (12 questions each), and six questions each in Anatomy, Forensic Medicine, Dermatology, Anaesthesia, Physiology, Psychiatry, Social & Preventive Medicine, Radio diagnosis and Radiotherapy.

The examination is of two hours duration and there is no negative marking. The assessment is objective and free of human bias and subjectivity. The result of the entrance examination is declared within 24 hours and is computerised.

DM/M.Ch Courses:

Selection of candidates is made on the basis of suitably designed MCQ type theory paper. Theory examination is of one and half-hour duration. There is negative marking for wrong answers.

MDS Course:

Selection of candidates is made on the basis of theory examination consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions. The duration of examination is one and half-hours.

1. M.D.: (a) Anaesthesia, Community Medicine (b) Dermatology, Venereology & Leprology (c) Medicine (d) Obstetrics and Gynaecology (e) Paediatrics (f) Psychiatry (g) Radio-diagnosis (h) Microbiology (i) Pathology (j) Pharmacology (k) Biochemistry (l) Radiotherapy (m) Transfusion Medicine.

The duration of all these courses is 3years and the candidate must have MBBS degree or its equivalent qualification.

2. M.S.: (a) Surgery (b) Orthopaedics (c) Otolaryngology (d) Ophthalmology.

The duration of all the M.S. courses is 3years and the candidate must have MBBS degree or its equivalent qualification.

3. D.M.: (a) Cardiology (b) Endocrinology (c) Nephrology (d) Neurology (e) Pulmonary & Critical Care (f) Medicine (g) Gastroenterology (h) Clinical Pharmacology (i) Neonatology.

Duration of all the courses is three years. Qualification required for all the above courses except Clinical Pharmacology and Neonatology is MD (Medicine) or MD (Pediatrics). Qualification required for Clinical Pharmacology and Neonatology is MD (Pharmacology) and MD(Pediatrics) respectively.

4. M.Ch.: (a) Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery (b) Neurosurgery (c) Paediatric Surgery (d) Urology (e) Surgical Gastroenterology (f) Plastic Surgery.

Duration of all the courses is three years and qualification required is M.S. (Surgery). For Plastic Surgery a candidate with M.S. (ENT) or M.S. (Orthopaedics) is also eligible.

5. MDS: Orthodontics, Pedodontia & Preventive Dentistry

Reservation of Seats

Approximately 22.5% of the total seats are reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes/Tribes in MD/MS/DM/M.Ch courses.
5% seats are reserved for candidates who have actually worked or are working in rural areas with less than 5000 population for a minimum period of 2 years in MD/MS Course.

PGIMER General Information

For all courses, where MBBS / BDS is an eligible requirement, the candidate who have made more than one attempt (i.e. have more than one failure, compartment or reappear) during their MBBS / BDS career, are not eligible For DM / M.Ch., courses, the candidates who have made more than one attempt in MBBS / MD / MS career are not eligible. However, those belonging to Sch. Caste / Tribes with upto two attempts in their MBBS / BDS career will be eligible for MD / MS, and MDS, House Job in Oral Health Sciences.

The candidates completing internship after December 2009 are not eligible for course No.1, 2 and 3.

The number of seats wherever indicated are provisional and may increase / decrease without any prior notice.

The courses at Sr. No. 6 to 10 & 13,14 are only for Sponsored / Deputed Candidates.

A candidate applying for more than one subject / course except category-1 & 3 is required to submit separate application complete in all respect for each subject / course.

The candidates may apply in the form downloadable (for Sr. No. 1 to 4) at http://pgimer.nic.in together with requisite fee by Demand Draft in the name of Director, PGI.

The prescribed application forms alongwith prospectus (Brochure of Information) are also available from the office of the undersigned either personally on payment of Rs. 500/- for general category and Rs. 400/- for SC / ST at the counter (Kairon Block, Room No. 306) from 10.30 AM to 12.30 PM. and from 2.30 PM to 3.30 PM on all working days except Saturdays (On Saturdays forms will be available from 10.30 AM to 12.00 Noon) or by post for which the request must be accompanied with a self addressed thick envelope of size 24 x 15 cm bearing postage stamps of Rs. 30/- and Bank Draft preferably from any SBI branch payable at SBI Medical Institute Branch (Code No. 1624), Chandigarh for General Rs. 500/- and for SC/ST Rs. 400/- (indicating category i.e. General or SC / ST) drawn in favour of the Director, PGI, Chandigarh.
However, prospectus for DM / M.Ch will be available for Rs. 500/- only as there Is no reservation for the same.
